We visit the RTJ Trail every year for a 4 day buddies golf trip. The staff is so helpful and very friendly. We LOVE the trail courses.
Played the Ridge Course for the first time. For winter, the course was in excellent condition, even though it was wet due to recent heavy rains. The Ridge Course is a target style course. The fairways are wide, but to score well one must be in the correct position off the tee. Most of the greens are elevated and protected by sand traps which forces you to carry the ball onto the green. All the greens were very fast, but held my approach shots.
To be able to score well you need to play the course multiple times.
I look forward to playing the Ridge Course again.
Also the Valley Course looked very challenging as well especially hole number 1.
The Clubhouse Staff along with the wait staff were very professional.
I played the Valley for the first time in 2 years on December 23rd, 2023. Now I was a member for 2 years in the early 2000’s. For the first time since then, the valley is nice to play. The reason I gave 3 stars is because we were behind schedule 25 minutes on hole 15. There was no ranger in sight. I decided to leave. My recommendation is not to play on weekends until RTJ provides better staffing.
This rating is not based on the course itself...it is beautiful and well maintained. It is based on the staff, the bag boys, the ones who are supposed to assist you with loading and unloading. They have no idea as to how to anticipate needs. An example: Two youngsters were riding into the parking area. They turned up their music loudly as they were about 50 yards from me. They clearly saw that I was unloading and one of the two should have stopped to offer assistance and take the cart back. Instead, they rocked out to their music and one of the two was napping when I returned the cart. Not that it applies here, but I have had back surgery and even tho I paid the full price for 9 holes, I can only putt. The help would gave been much appreciated and well rewarded. This is on you, RTJ management, train your kids! They will benefit in the future!!
Played the Ridge Course for the first time. My suggestion is don't play here in November. First off the greens were recently aerated with the large hole plugs and then sanded, which meant that you had little control over where your putt went. Showed up about an hour and fifteen minutes ahead of TT only to find that driving range is closed!! Pro shop guy says
"all RTJ courses close the ranges on Tues for maintenance". Would be nice if you mentioned that to customers who are paying good money to play your courses.
We paid full price to play despite having to putt on lousy greens and deal with over seeding issues as well as major course renovations on many bunkers. How about discounting the fees when course conditions are not up to standards. Another issue at this time of year is over seeding which has only partly grown in, so fairways are hit or miss. Overall not a pleasant experience due to lack of advance notice by those in charge regarding course conditions. Some people travel a long way to play RTJ courses, would be nice if management/staff would be more forthcoming regarding condition of courses and notice of parts of course that may not be available (practice facilities).
Make sure you remember to take everything out of your cart before leaving. Cart boys have sticky fingers. Called the morning after I left my rangefinder and they said they “didn’t find it” then called again a few days later. Nothing. I was one of the last people returning my cart. It was stuck to the cart very visible. What a shame.
5 stars for the 5 some they let us have on Saturday morning. The starter initially was worried we would be a slow moving road block backing up his course for days, however the real road block was already out on the course in front of us. We kept pace, and had a successful 5 some thanks to the gracious starter. I have never found a course so welcoming to 5-somes! Great experience 10/10 recommend
Gorgeous time of year in the Birmingham area. Fun course - challenging yet approachable for any skill level. RTJ courses are a true treasure for Alabama and our visitors.
